The S- and T-rows

Add さしすせそ and たちつてと to your reading toolkit.

By the end of this lesson

  • Recognize the main idea in the s- and t-rows.
  • Use one clear example before you begin the quiz.
  • Build confidence with a small, repeatable step.

Most S- and T-row sounds follow the vowel pattern, with two special readings to notice: し is shi and ち is chi.

Two useful rows

Read さしすせそ as sa, shi, su, se, so and たちつてと as ta, chi, tsu, te, to.

Notice the exceptions

Treat し, ち, and つ as whole sounds rather than forcing them into a simple spelling rule.

Study these forms

Read each character in order. These two-character drills practice sound decoding; some are sound sequences rather than vocabulary words. さあ (sa-a) · しあ (shi-a) · すあ (su-a) · せあ (se-a) · そあ (so-a) · たあ (ta-a) · ちあ (chi-a) · つあ (tsu-a) · てあ (te-a) · とあ (to-a) · さい (sa-i) · しい (shi-i) · すい (su-i) · せい (se-i) · そい (so-i) · たい (ta-i) · ちい (chi-i) · つい (tsu-i) · てい (te-i) · とい (to-i) · さう (sa-u) · しう (shi-u) · すう (su-u) · せう (se-u) · そう (so-u)
